Smoky Sweet and Sour Pork

Smoky Sweet and Sour Pork, we love Chinese food, but we can make it at home to suit our taste. Ken made a great sauce starting with bottled sweet and sour sauce and added lots of imagination.

We gave it a “Kiss of Smoke” with Pacific Pellet Gourmet BBQ Pellet Country Cherry pellets in a wedge.

We’ve given it a taste test in a bowl, over white rice, fried rice, noodles and over a baked potato. Smoky, sweet and sassy with seared tender pork, pineapple, ginger and smoked red bell pepper. It was so good.

Patti and I have set one night a week just for us. It’s our date night. We usually put something special on our Sawtooth Wood Pellet Grill/Smoker but sometimes we cook inside. We always eat outside on our patio where it is very comfortable with a rainforest theme.  Wood Pellet Patio Heater, little lights, candles, lanterns and surround sound. We enjoy a little wine, or strawberry margaritas using frozen strawberries for ice, good food, music and sometimes a dance or two…

Our Ingredients

Cooking Directions: Smoky Sweet and Sour Pork

I had 2 huge pork roasts (about 7 pounds) and cut them into some large pieces for easier handling to marinade and sear. Placing the pork into an extra large freezer bag or plastic container marinate pork chunks in Orange Pineapple juice overnight.

Season your pork, I used out “Date Night Butt Rub” and preheat the grill to 450* (232c). When your Grill Grates are screaming hot place your pork directly on them. I did these for about 8 minutes per side with a quarter turn around 4 minutes. Keep in mind that you are not cooking the pork but just doing a heavy sear for flavor.

When the pork is cool enough to handle cut it into 1 to 2 inch chunks placing them into an oiled (we used Duck Fat) cast iron dish. Add 2 cups Orange Pineapple juice, ginger, red pepper flakes and smoked garlic.

Now you’re ready to go back onto the grill @300* (149c) for 2 hours.
Add onions and pineapple and cover with foil for 2 hours.
Uncover and add the chopped red peppers and 4 cups of the sweet and sour sauce.
Cook for 1.5 hours or until the sauce is nice and thick, stirring occasionally.

Note: I get a lot of questions about the kind of pellets you can use with a recipe. Keep in mind that a recipe is just an outline. Some you need to follow closely like when you are making bread, but most you can do anything you can dream, our favorite way to cook. Feel free to mix and match the pellets until you find a combination you really like. Also you are only smoking at temps less than 250 degrees (122c), anything higher is cooking and there will not be much if any smoke so it does not matter what kind of pellet you are using.

About our Recipes

We do our recipes on our patio where we have a lineup of grills, including Green Mountain,  Sawtooth, Louisiana, Royall, Memphis, Traeger pellet grills, Char Griller side box smoker, Saber, Charmglow, Char-Broil, The Big Easy, Pacific Living Outdoor Oven, Lodge Sportsman’s, Brinkman and Weber. I call it our “Wall of Grill”. Our grilling styles are healthy and low fat and will fit pelletheads, gas, natural wood and even charcoal purists. Almost any of our recipes can be done on any kind of good BBQ.

The important thing to keep in mind is TIME & TEMPERATURE. You can even do some of them in the oven or crock pot, but, then you lose all the flavors you get from cooking outdoors. But sometimes it does rain.

Remember that a recipe is simply an outline; it is not written in stone. Don’t be afraid to make changes to suit your taste. Take it and run with it….

Ken & Patti
